Funding Opportunities for Research Students

ESRC Studentships

We are delighted to announce that the department was awarded in 2008 eleven Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) quota awards for 1+3/+3 research training. We are now accepting application for entry as follows:

2008/9 - 3 awards - All Allocated
2009/10 - 4 awards - All Allocated
2010/2011 - 4 awards

These awards are an excellent opportunity for prospective PhD candidates to gain the funding to participate in our friendly and very successful department.

Please note, applicants should comply with the ESRC's UK residential eligibility criteria. For full details please visit the ESRC website.

The four remaining studentship ESRC quota awards available for 2010 entry can be for a 1+3 programme (Masters followed by PhD) or a +3 programme (PhD). Students who already have an MA with an acceptable level of training in research methods are eligible for the +3 funding route which excludes the initial taught MA programme. The ESRC also offers collaborative (CASE) studentships. ESRC funding is available for both part time and full time study.

Applications are invited for research in any of the four main areas of research in the Department:

  • Psychology in educational research
  • Literacy and numeracy research
  • Technology-enhanced learning
  • higher education research

Potential supervisors and their research interest within these fields can be found at:

http://www.lancs.ac.uk/fass/edres/profiles/phd

In addition to these four awards the University offers 2 interdisciplinary ESRC studentships. In order to be considered for these awards the proposed area of research should be cross-disciplinary, which in most cases would be inter-departmental, with supervisors based in different departments. Interview dates for these will be different.

Closing date for 2010 applications: 19th March, 2010.

Interviews for shortlisted candidates: Monday 12th April, 2010.
