The experience of doing a research degree

We offer a lively research culture in which students participate alongside other postgraduates and staff. Meeting people with similar interests and attending research seminars help our postgraduates to feel part of the life of the Department and involved as a member of a community of researchers. The Department received a top-rated grade 5 in the recent 2001 Research Assessment Exercise.

Research in the department has been funded in recent years by:

  • Economic and Social Research Council
  • European Union
  • British Council
  • Further Education Unit
  • Leverhulme Trust
  • Local education authorities
  • Schools Technology Project
  • Adult Literacy and Basic Skills Units
  • Joint Matriculation Board

The department has an active and mutually beneficial relationship with a network of local schools and colleges.

Apart from the research going on in the Department itself, there are two attached research units. The Centre for the Study of Education and Training (CSET) and the Centre for Studies in Advanced Learning Technology (CSALT). There are also a number of inter-departmental and Faculty research groups such as the Literacy Discussion Group, and the Centre for Women's Studies.
