PinE 203 Language, Thinking and Learning

LettersThis embeds a core study of language and concept formation within the context of learning. It explores the demands on cognitive abilities that are made in instructional settings and the implications of research for instructional design and assessment. This module explores how we learn and how can we use our understanding of cognition, specifically problem solving, learning and expertise to inform our teaching. We will consider what issues we need to explore in order to understand learning - metacognition, beliefs about knowledge and learning, the use of language to support concept formation, and social and technological contexts. We will then apply these ideas to some specific classroom contexts - the cases of literacy, numeracy and science.

PinE 204 Perception, Learning & Memory

comment - I found it really interesting. You know that you have got to grips with some difficulty, but fascinating material.

This embeds a core study of perception, learning and memory with frequent reference to implications for education. Throughout the module we will link our study of each subtopic to the roles of attention, prior knowledge and expectations, and conscious and non-conscious processing.

Tutors: Dr Leanne Thompson, Dr Catherine Fritz and Dr Julie-Ann Sime.
