Chris Witter

Research Student, Associate Lecturer

County College
Lancaster University
United Kingdom

I am an Associate Lecturer in the Department of English & Creative Writing, at Lancaster University, and Visiting Research Fellow in the Department of American and Canadian Studies, University of Nottingham. I was awarded my doctorate in February 2014, for PhD research under the title 'The American Short Story in the 1960s: Literary Experiment and Social Change.' I currently teach on the ENGL101 World Literature undergraduate course. I am also employed by the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences to mentor students, helping them with their academic writing.

My PhD was funded by an AHRC Studentship Award. As part of my research I undertook an AHRC funded Kluge Fellowship at the Library of Congress, Washington, DC, in 2011. I recently won the 2012 RWS Postgraduate Essay Prize, with an essay titled ‘Grace Paley and the Tenement Pastoral'. This was published in Key Words: A Journal of Cultural Materialism, 11 (October 2013). I am a member of the Raymond Williams Society (RWS) and the British Association for American Studies (BAAS).

My research focuses on postwar American literature, with particular attention to the relation between 'experimental' fiction and the politics of class, ethnicity and gender. Specifically, I have written about the ways in which changing social relations in the postwar period affect different writers' engagements with capitalist modernity and appropriations of modernism. This has led me towards a reconsideration of the emergence of literary postmodernism.
