Catherine Spooner: 'Goth 2 Boss'

Date: 16 October 2013

Dr Catherine Spooner took part in a panel event on Gothic TV at Manchester Metropolitan University on 14th October 2013.

Her talk, 'Goth 2 Boss: Making and Unmaking Gothic Subjects on Television' explored Goth identities within the framework of the television makeover show and asked what it means when a Goth is transformed into a non-Goth, or vice versa. Is Gothic a form of bad taste, as suggested by shows like Gok's Fashion Fix or Snog, Marry, Avoid? How and why do characters in shows such The IT Crowd, The Big Bang Theory or The Mighty Boosh subvert the makeover to become Gothic? In either case, what Gothic looks like is always prioritised.

This event also featured talks from Dr Stacey Abbott (Roehampton University) and Dr Linnie Blake (Manchester Metropolitan University) and was part of Manchester Metropolitan University's 'Contemporary Gothic' programme of events.
