ENGL 390: Monstrous Bodies

Using a range of texts and genres from the Romantic Period, this module will consider the importance of the physical human body, in health and sickness. Examining the historical context in which these texts were written, we will look at such topics as illness, death, doctors, medical treatments, drug use, pregnancy, disability, physical strength, sexuality, sensuality, race, gender, physiognomy and phrenology.
