Africa Studies Group

The African Studies Group is part of the Centre for Transcultural Research and Writing. The Director, Dr Charlotte Baker (DELC) set up the group in 2008, bringing together researchers and postgraduates from a range of departments at Lancaster University who have a shared interest in African Studies, broadly conceived.

Members include academics and postgraduates from the departments of Politics, Philosophy and Religion, Linguistics and English Language, English Literature and Creative Writing, European Languages and Cultures, Law, History, LICA, Sociology, and the Lancaster Environment Centre. The African Studies Group meets regularly throughout the academic year for work in progress seminars.

The group has also organised an international conference, ‘Africa: Cultural Translations’ in 2010, postgraduate study days in May 2011 and March 2013, as well as a number of research seminars with speakers from Lancaster University, the Centre for African Studies at Leeds University, the University of the Western Cape, the University for Development Studies in Ghana, and the Centre of African Studies at Edinburgh University.
