Dr Bartikowski giving a paper at the conference "Forms of Remembering the Holocaust"

Date: 21 November 2013

Dr Kilian Bartikowski will be presenting a research paper at the International Conference "Forms of Remembering the Holocaust" hosted by the Italien-Zentrum at the Technische Univerität Dresden from 21-23 November 2013. The title of his paper is Der Fall Karl Löwith: Zu Möglichkeiten und Grenzen von Wahrnehmungsprozessen der Judenverfolgung während der 1930er Jahre im internationalen Vergleich.

Karl Löwith was as important philosopher and Martin Heidegger's disciple. He was forced to leave Germany in 1934 due to his Jewish background and the anti-Semitic politics of the National-Socialist regime. His emigration led him into the later allied countries with Nazi Germany Italy and Japan before coming in 1941 to the United States. Expelled from Fascist Italy again due to the growing anti-Semitism he taught from 1936 to 1941 at the Imperial University in Sendai. While Löwith's is well known in research about Jewish emigration to Japan he is still an unknown field for the Italian case. The aim of this paper is to compare his exile in the different countries.
