Thought presentation 25 years on

Abstract

Although chapter 10 of Style in Fiction has been quite influential in the study of discourse presentation, a lot has changed in the intervening years. This paper discusses the changes to the discourse presentation model proposed by Semino and Short (2004) and the papers produced by the Lancaster SW&TP project team, concentrating on the thought presentation cline, what that cline now looks like, the effects of the various categories on the cline and issues that still need to be addressed. Semino, E. and Short, M. (2004) Corpus Stylistics: A Corpus-based Study of Speech, Thought and Writing Presentation in Narratives, London and New York, Routledge.
