The Governance of GMOs and the constrains for a redefinition of the public arena in Brazil

Date: 4 April 2006 Time: 0.00 pm

Debates concerning the risk of Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs) have stimulated, in some countries, a demand for further deliberation about the nature of risk itself and strategies of risk assessment and governance. Of particular concern are public perceptions of the risk of new technologies and the potential for such technologies to contribute to existing public tensions and controversies. In many countries the tenor of recent risk debates has contributed to calls for the democratisation of science and technology and new forms of governance.
