IAS - The North-South Dialogue

Date: 01 April 2003

The North-South Dialogue was an opportunity for staff from the Faculty of Social Sciences, the Management School and the Faculty of Arts and Humanities to meet, exchange information about research interests and, in particular, identify ways in which research collaboration can be fostered within and/ or across faculties. The all-day event comprised a series of parallel discussion groups organised around a range of themes in the morning and afternoon, followed in each instance by a plenary meeting in which rapporteurs summarised the key research themes and issues which had emerged from each group.

The major themes discussed were:

  • Knowledge-based economy
  • Technologies, innovation, networks and people
  • Anti-globalisation and/ or anti-capitalism
  • Knowledge and security
  • The public sector after the "mixed economy"
  • Politics, ethics and religion
  • Social capital and entrepreneurship
  • The learning society
  • Creative industries
