IAS Workshop - Time, Space, Discourse: Ontologies of Modernity

Date: 10 June 2004 Time: 1.30-6.00 pm

The Faculty of Arts and Humanities and the Institute for Advanced Study hosted a workshop on the meanings, relationships and roles of time and space in the contemporary formation of cultures and communities. It focused more precisely on the epistemological and ontological problems that arise in triangulating discourse, time and space within 'modernity', that is to say, within the domain of the 'here and now'.

The event brought together scholars who have been concerned primarily with issues of history and temporality with those whose interests lie more with place and spatiality, who offered conceptual investigations of shared theoretical perspectives, chiefly those of Marx, Heidegger, Benjamin, Lefebvre, Foucault, Derrida, Jameson and Harvey, and also examined these perspectives through the lens of their distinctive empirical concerns.

These ranged from the historiographical legitimation of the French Third Republic to the erasure of the Holocaust in the memorialisation of Modernist architecture, and the spatial dynamics of state formation in Modern Europe.

The ultimate aim of this wide-ranging, interdisciplinary undertaking was to gauge any interest in a more sustained and collaborative exploration of the epistemological and ontological problems that arise in linking discourse, time and space within the cultures and societies of the 'here and now' and the 'there and then'.

Speakers:

  • Stuart Elden, Geography, Durham University
  • Derek Sayer, History, Lancaster University
  • Torbjörn Wandel, History, Truman State University
