Combining corpora for a study in historical pragmatics

Ursula Lutzky

(Lancaster University, UK)

The recent publication of historical corpora, some of which were especially designed for the analysis of "meaning in interaction", promises that new insights may be gained in one of the largely neglected areas of linguistic study - historical pragmatics. My PhD project on discourse markers in EModE tries to contribute its share, making combined use of three of these corpora, the Corpus of English Dialogues, the Parsed Corpus of Early English Correspondence as well as the Penn-Helsinki Parsed Corpus of Early Modern English. After a short outline of the corpora and my reasons for using them, I will describe what their combination entailed (e.g. overlaps) and present some of the results gained in my text type analysis of the discourse marker marry.
