Workshop on Public Sociology with Michael Burawoy

Date: 26 November 2007 Time: 4.00-6.00 pm

Workshop on Public Sociology with Michael Burawoy Monday 26th November 4-6pm IAS MR3

Michael Burawoy is Professor of Sociology at University of California at Berkeley, former President of the American Sociological Association, and author of seminal works on ethnography and employment under capitalism and state socialism, and on 'public sociology'.

For the workshop, we are assuming that people will have read Michael's paper on public sociology- available on his website at: https://webfiles.berkeley.edu/~burawoy/burawoy_pdf/2004PresidentialAddressASR.pdf so that we can get straight into the discussion. There are many other papers on this site relating to public sociology, including responses from debates over the past few3 years. In addition there's a video of him lecturing on the topic (the key parts are about 20mins into the talk and onwards). http://gs.strath.ac.uk/content/view/289/133/

There will be brief (5-10 minute each) responses from Sylvia Walby, Brian Wynne, Endre Danyi and Alex Gallas and Andrew Sayer, followed by Michael's response and a general discussion, chaired by John Urry.

It will be followed by drinks and dinner at the Sultan. (Let me know if you want to attend the latter.)
