BAAL Linguistic Ethnography Forum: 'ethnographies of literacy: an Anglo-French dialogue'

Date: 8 May 2008 Time: 9.30 am - 4.30 pm

Both France and Britain have substantial traditions of ethnographic research on literacy. But it is only recently that links have begun to be made between researchers in the two countries through a seminar "Ecriture & literacy" organised by the Ecole des Hautes Etudes en Sciences Sociales in Paris, June 2007. Such initial contacts have revealed significant and previously largely unexplored parallels between the two traditions. The forthcoming seminar "Ethnographies of literacy: an Anglo-French dialogue" will explore shared issues of interest, including personal writings and writing as the interface between the instition and the individual.

The day will bring together members of the Lancaster Literacy Research Centre and the UK Linguistic Ethnography Forum with researchers from the Ecole des Hautes Etudes en Sciences Sociales, the Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique and the Etablissement National d'Enseignement Supérieure Agronomique de Dijon. Wide-ranging panel sessions will explore topics including: text as a structuring agent; writing in the workplace; scientific authorship; literacy and regulatory practices in farming; and vernacular literacies in a range of settings, including prisons, villages in Mali and online (full programme to follow). Small group discussions will be set up to explore ideas raised in the panel sessions.

The languages of the day will be English and French. Participation by all, whatever their command of the respective languages, will be facilitated.

An initial email has been circulated to members of the British Association of Applied Linguistics Linguistic Ethnography Forum.

Numbers will be restricted to 30 participants to facilitate discussion. Fees for the day are £40, which includes refreshments and lunch. A small number of places will be reserved for postgraduate students at the reduced price of £20.To book a place, please send a cheque made payable to Lancaster University to: Jessica AbrahamsLiteracy Research CentreInstitute for Advanced StudiesLancaster UniversityLancaster LA1 4YTPlease enclose your name, institutional affiliation, email and postal address. If you have any further enquiries or if you require a pro-forma invoice please contact Jessica Abrahams, j.abrahams@lancaster.ac.uk .
