Iredell Lecture: Truth and Justice in the Wake of Dictatorship and Armed conflict

Date: 13 March 2008 Time: 5.30 pm

Professor Jose Zalaquett, Professor of Human Rights at the School of Law of the University of Chile.

José Zalaquett is probably Latin America's foremost and most well known authority on human rights. He has taught as visiting professor at the Law Schools of Harvard University, New York University, the University of Maryland and the University of Toronto.

After the 1973 coup d'état, Zalaquett headed the Human Rights Department of the Committee for Peace, later known as the Vicaría de la Solidaridad, a church-sponsored organization that provided legal assistance to thousands of political prisoners and their families in Chile. For this work he was imprisoned and expelled from Chile in 1976. During his ten years of exile, he was involved with Amnesty International, as Chairman of the International Executive Committee, the governing body of the organization, and in other capacities. He was a member of the Inter-American Commission of Human Rights of the OAS (2002-2005; president during the period 2003 - 2004) and has conducted human rights missions to numerous countries in Africa, the Americas, the Middle East and Southeast Asia. Since 1984 he has worked in particular on truth and justice in situations of political transition. To that effect, he visited Argentina (1984), Uruguay (1985), the Philippines (1987), Uganda (1987), El Salvador (1993), South Africa (1994 through 2003), Guatemala (1996) Yugoslavia (2000) and Peru (2001-2003). In recognition of his work Prof. Zalaquett has received honorary doctorates from the University of Notre Dame and the City University of New York, the National Prize for Humanities and Social Sciences (Chile, 2003), and several other awards, including the MacArthur Foundation Award (1990-95) and the UNESCO Prize for the Teaching of Human Rights (1994).
