Doing Sociological Research- A Level Students Taster Day

Date: 3 July 2008 Time: 9.15am-3.45 pm

This is a 'taster day' aimed primarily at A/S students. The students will spend the day in the Sociology Department. They will get the chance to experience a sociology lecture, design their own research projects, and learn about the diversity of sociological research and research methods at Lancaster throughpresentations and discussionwith academic staff, undergraduates and doctoral students. The first part of the day will be focused on new research on social class (and poverty and social exclusion) and will consider emergent forms of 'class making'within Britain. We willanalysethe use of terms such as `Chav' and 'hoodies' and explore the tensions between different youth groups and subculturesand how these are classed. The students will then design their own research projects on this topic. In the second part of the day, research will be presented by current Undergraduates and Postgraduates - this will includework on fair trade, care workers, charity campaigns and tourism. Finally, our current UG sociology students will give the visitors a tour of the campus.
