IAS International Lecture: Erik Olin Wright

Vilas Distinguished Professor, Department of Sociology, University of Wisconsin-Madison

"Envisioning Real Utopias"

5pm Monday 8th December

Location: Management School Lecture Theatre 2

All welcome!

Erik Olin Wright is one of the US's leading radical scholars. He has published widely on class, democracy, inequality and marxist theory, and 'real utopias'. The Real Utopias Project http://www.ssc.wisc.edu/~wright/OVERVIEW.html , begun in 1991, explores a wide range of proposals and models for radical social change. The basic idea is to combine serious normative discussions of the underlying principles and rationales for different emancipatory visions with the analysis of pragmatic problems of institutional design. This has resulted in a number of conferences and collections on inequality, democracy, market socialism and egalitarianism.

Erik's home page has a large number of links and downloadable papers. at:

In addition to his lecture, Erik will be leading a workshop for postgraduates and researchers on the morning of Tuesday 9th December, from 10 to12.noon, location: Faraday Seminar Room 1.
