STS Mixtures: Video conference seminar with Lucy Suchman
Date: 7 October 2009 Time: 8:00pm - 10:30pm
Venue: Institute for Advanced Studies, Meeting Room 2/3
Professor Lucy Suchman from Centre for Science Studies, Department of Sociology, will be speaking at our final STS Mixtures video conference seminar of the year. She will be discussing Robot Biographies.
Professor Suchman will be speaking from York University, Toronto, and opening up a discussion with institutions from around the world - from Melbourne, Australia, to Irvine, California.
As preparation for the discussion we invite you to read her paper (written jointly with Claudia Castaņeda), which can be downloaded via the STS Mixtures website.
Due to time zone differences this is an evening event, and we will be hosting an STS Mixtures buffet dinner from 8pm-9pm. The video conference will follow at 9pm. We hope you can join us for what should be a lively evening!
Please book your place by emailing Laura Watts, Department of Sociology, and indicate if you are vegetarian/vegan or have any other special dietary requirements. Places are limited...
STS Mixtures Trans-Continental Video Conference Seminar Series
The 'STS Mixtures' is an informal seminar series, which began at the Centre for Science Studies, Lancaster University UK. This expanded to include a series of video conference seminars with the Actor-Network Theory Group at University of Melbourne.
We are expanding this once more into a trans-continental video conference seminar series in 2009, and are inviting individuals and research groups from around the world to participate in the discussion. The theme will be 'Materiality, Specificity, and Story'.
Three events in May, July, and October, with internationally recognised guest speakers, will explore how materialities get enacted differently in different places, and how these effect the making of different empirical accounts or stories; how materiality, place, and story are intertwined world-making practices. We also hope that the discussion will explore generative methods for doing materiality and story differently in STS, within academic writing, map-making, design, teaching, and so on.
