Workshop 4: Experimental Objects

18-19 Feb 2010

Storey Creative Industries Centre, Lancaster

This workshop is organised in collaboration with the Storey Gallery, Lancaster, and the Centre for the History of Science, Technology and Medicine (CHSTM), University of Manchester). In this workshop we will bring together historians of science, anthropologists of technology and devices, and designers to explore entities whose mode of existence is in various ways caught up with the experimental. In conjunction with a specially commissioned exhibition of art works on the same theme, we will bring a diverse range of such objects together, in order to interrogate how different modes of experimentality stabilise and destabilise objects.

Speakers include

  • Bruno Strasser (Yale University)
  • Ilana Lowy (CNRS, Paris)
  • Gail Davies (Geography, University College London)
  • John Pickstone (CHSTM, University of Manchester)
  • Lucy Suchman (Sociology, Lancaster University)
  • Alexandra Deschamps-Sonsino (!, Milan, Italy)
  • Daria Loi (artist, USA)
  • Dieter Daniels (Academy of Visual Arts (HGB), Leipzig)
  • Stuart Walker (Design, Lancaster University)
