Screening of "My DDR T-Shirt"
Date: 10 November 2009 Time: 7.30 pm
Venue: Bowland North, Elizabeth Livingston Lecture Theatre
We are delighted that local filmmaker Ian Hawkins will visit the Department of European Languages and Cultures and we will show his documentary "My DDR T-Shirt" on 10th November 2009 to commemorate 20 years of the Fall of the Berlin Wall (Do you remember what you did on 9th November 1989?). The screening will be at 7:30 p.m. at Bowland North, Elizabeth Livingston LT and is followed by a Q & A with the director. We hope that this DELC event will once more bring together colleagues, students and people from outside university, so feel free to forward it to anyone who might be interested.
My DDR T-Shirt is a documentary film by Ian Hawkins. It was inspired by a trip to Berlin in 2005. When Ian bought a souvenir t-shirt with the old East German communist symbol on it, he realised he needed to learn about life in East Germany (the DDR, the Deutsche Demokratische Republik) before he could wear it. And so, he returned to Berlin with his camcorder and set about gathering stories from both the East and West. These stories and the people that tell them help Ian on his quest to understand what life was like in East Germany.
