Professor William Bowman of Gettysburg College, USA, will give a seminar entitled: Sport in Interwar Austria, with special reference to the Hakoah Sports Club.

The Hakoah Sports Club was set up in 1909 as an expression of 'Muscular Judaism'. It attracted men and women, who competed in a number of sporting events. Its football team won the Austrian football league championship in 1925 and toured Europe and the USA. The club was closed down by the Nazis in 1938 after the Anschluss. Professor Bowman will be exploring its activities, locating it in the history of sport, and explaining its cultural and political significance, and fate.
