Lancaster University Library Exhibition
The People's Gothic - Craftmanship and Artistry in the North West
Curated by Brian Hodgson (PhD candidate, Ruskin Library and Research Centre, Lancaster University)
Brian Hodgson's research has led him to believe that Ruskin's definition of the Nature of Gothic can be seen as a craft based definition (picked up by the Arts and Craft Movement). In this exhibition several craft features from churches and allied buildings (not all strictly Gothic) in the North West are presented and Ruskin's definitions applied. The concept is part of Brian's PhD thesis.
This exhibition is free and is situated in the exhibition space on the ground floor of the main university library. Please see Library opening times for access.
Brian Hodgson is a Fellow of the Forum for the Built Environment, Member of the Institute of Wood Science, Master of the Worshipful Company of Carpenters, and the Worshipful Company of Joiners and Ceilers, Master and Fellow of The Institute of Carpenters, and Master and Licentiate of the City and Guilds Senior Awards (Imperial College of Science and Technology). After a traditional 6 year apprenticeship Brian took up studies of Wood Science, Building Technology and Science, Building Forensics and Building Conservation. He has taught at several colleges in the East Midlands and with the Local History Studies Section of the Extra Mural Dept of Nottingham University.
