Seminar Series - How does online asynchronous text-based communication mediate the learning process in a Distance Creative Writing Masters programme? Approaches to data collection

My research is concerned with exploring the ways that working relationships develop between students when mediated through text.

Building on data from an initial exploratory project, I am now at the early stage of my main data collection where I am working with a group of students in the second and final year of their programme. My focus is on their experiences and the meanings made by them of their textual exchanges within the context of the particular pedagogy and Virtual Learning Environmentof the programme.

My challenge to date has been unravelling my approach to the data already available to me within the VLE and what and how to collect further from students. Teasing out my methodology and keeping my approach todata collection in line with this methodology has been a major part of this challenge. It is on this that this seminar will focus. I'll tell the story so far and I invite participants to help me tackle the issues that face me in my next chapter!
