The Spatial Turn? Towards a Relational Reading of Galician Cultural History, Kirsty Hooper, University of Liverpool

Date: 8 June 2011 Time: 5.00 pm

Venue: Bowland North SR23

Kirsty Hooper's paper 'The Spatial Turn? Towards a Relational Reading of Galician Cultural History'

This event is part of the DELC Research Seminar Series on 'Transnational - Transcultural - Global?'

makes the case for a 'remapping' of Galician cultural theory to take into account emerging voices and spaces of enunciation that have been rendered invisible by the dominant national model. Drawing on scholarship on postnationalism in the Iberian context, on the work of Deleuze & Guattari, and on Caribbean and Atlantic cultural theory (Glissant, Hall, Gilroy) it makes the case that shift from historicist to spatial models of cultural theory provide a vital stimulus for imagining how Galician culture might be understood outside the teleological national(ist) structure, and thus, perhaps, destabilising the apparently impermeable, hierarchical relationship with Spain that has conditioned accounts of Galician cultural history.
