Second Language Learning and Teaching research group SLLAT presents:
Dana Gablasova on Comparing L1 and L2 vocabulary acquisition: An analysis of newly learned wordsAbstract:Learning meanings of new specialized words is an integral part of learning new subject knowledge. However, despite their crucial role in subject knowledge development, technical words have so far not received much attention in vocabulary acquisition research. In this talk, I will discuss research that compared learning specialised vocabulary through L1 and L2. The data come from an experimental study which investigated the acquisition of specialised vocabulary from textbook reading by Slovak high-school students, intermediate or advanced users of English. The results showed that although students learning through their L2 acquired the meanings of the specialised vocabulary items to a considerable degree, they still differed significantly from their L1-instructed counterparts in several respects. They could recall fewer word meanings after the reading, they acquired the words to a lesser depth, and after a week, their knowledge of the words faded more rapidly than that of the L1-instructed participants. The significance of the findings for L2 vocabulary acquisition in academic contexts (such as bilingual education or Content and Language Integrated Learning) will be discussed.
