Methodological issues in tracking media coverage of findings from the international survey of adult skills PIAAC

Date: 10 December 2013 Time: 1.00- 2.00 pm

Venue: C89, County South, Lancaster University

At the next Literacy Research Discussion Group session (Tuesday 10 December) we will be pleased to welcome Mary Hamilton (Lancaster University) who will be speaking on:

Methodological issues in tracking media coverage of findings from the international survey of adult skills PIAAC

Last month the OECD released findings from its latest international survey of adult skills (PIAAC) simultaneously in 22 countries. Together with colleagues Jeff Evans (Middlesex University)and Keiko Yasukawa (UTS, Sydney), I set up a 'crowd sourced' survey of the subsequent media response to these results. Our aim is to look at the ways in which surveys like the PIAAC are used and responded to in different national contexts and to find out what aspects of the findings are highlighted.

The amount of coverage we collected was overwhelming though it was unevenly spread across different countries. The varied nature of the media sources and the pattern of relationships between them makes any straight forward quantitative handling of the data problematic.

In this session I will present some examples of the media coverage we collected, the questions we hope to address through analysing this data, the sources we covered and some of the surprises and complexities related to these. I hope to discuss possible analysis strategies with the group.
