!CANCELLED! SLLAT/LTRG/LVC present: Tamara Rakic on 'The role of language and accents in social psychology'

Date: 15 January 2014 Time: 04.00-05.30pm

Venue: Bowland North SR10

The Role of Language and Accents in Social Psychology

Language and language varieties are present in our everyday interactions with others. In my presentation I will talk about the role that words (i.e., what has been said) and pronunciation (i.e., how it has been said) have in interpersonal interactions.

The example for the first aspect would be a cross-cultural study: we found that due to the complex language of honorifics used by Japanese participants, they tend to categorize people based on their age even when the difference is of only a couple of years; on the contrary no such effect was found for Italian participants.

With regards to the pronunciation I'll talk about the influence of accents on evaluation of speakers (e.g., in a job interview context), but also the role of accents in ethnic categorization.

Finally I will present some project ideas I would like to pursue in the near future.
