UCREL CRS: The British Sign Language Corpus and BSL SignBank

Date: 23 January 2014 Time: 2.00-3.00 pm

Venue: Management School LT5

Presenter: Kearsy Cormier&Jordan Fenlon - Deafness Cognition and Language Research Centre (DCAL) | UCL

This presentation describes the creation of (1) the British Sign Language (BSL) Corpus, the first corpus of its kind in the United Kingdom (i.e., a large machine-readable dataset that is maximally representative) and one of the largest sign language corpora in the world, and (2) BSL SignBank, a corpus-based dictionary and lexical database developed as a consequence of ongoing annotation work on the BSL Corpus. We also describe how the use of sign language corpora and lexical databases based on them represents an emerging field within sign language linguistics, and how the challenges of working with sign language corpora shed important light on the multimodal nature of human language generally.
