LTRG talk on Assessing Young Language Learners by Karmen Pizorn (University of Ljubljana)
Date: 4 February 2014 Time: 3.30-5.00 pm
Venue: Charles Carter A15
The Language Testing Research Group is pleased to announce the following talk:
Assessing Young Language Learners
by Karmen Pizorn (University of Ljubljana, Slovenia)
In many countries, the age at which children officially start to learn a foreign language in a classroom has been lowered to an earlier and earlier age due to a number of reasons, ranging from political agendas to more research-based motives.
Assessing young language learners in the classroom and on a national level plays an integral part in keeping track of these children's language acquisition progress and diagnosing their strengths and weaknesses. However, a special approach to language assessment is needed for children, since young language learners are different from adult language learners.
The talk will focus on the idiosyncrasies of assessing young language learners in the classroom and on a national level. It will also seek to answer the question whether classroom-based assessment and national 'testing' can be complemented.
The speaker has been actively involved in assessing young language learners from 2004 when the first cohort of Year 6 students (aged 11) were assessed on a national level in Slovenia. She has also supervised a number of teachers in doing classroom assessment of young foreign language learners and is teaching a group of young English language learners once a week which gives her first-hand insight into children's specific ways of foreign language learning.
