Postgraduate Study

Phot of Alexandra SquareLancaster is a unique community for study and reflection. The campus is a research intensive village set on a hill overlooking the Lake District where intellectual activity can be conducted undisturbed by noise and the urban environment. Whether you work best in the library or on a grassy hill in the sun, Lancaster offers a place for study and enquiry unequalled in the North West. With a dedicated accommodation district for resident post-graduates where you will meet researchers from across the world working in a wide range of disciplines, with numerous opportunities to develop research networks at FASS events, and a range of wonderful countryside within easy walking, cycling or driving distance, Lancaster supports a post-graduate experience focused on the cultivation of the intellect.

Lively Postgraduate Community

students chattingAll departments, institutes and centres in the Faculty have a lively, postgraduate culture with about 55% of our postgraduate students from overseas. Most departments run regular reading groups and seminar series, at which either guest speakers or local staff and graduate students present papers. These are often on interdisciplinary themes and all postgraduate students are encouraged to attend.

Postgraduate study need not be firmly tied to a student's undergraduate degree. Many seek an opportunity to explore a new discipline or an interdisciplinary area at the interface of several disciplines, to sharpen their research skills before tackling an ambitious PhD topic or to undertake a professional course to deepen their understanding of their field of work by engaging in advanced study, reflection and research. Whatever the reasons for studying for a higher degree, the Faculty is committed to supporting all its postgraduate students throughout their studies and beyond.

Research excellence

Research at the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences (FASS) has been rated ‘world-leading’ in the 2014 Research Excellence Framework (REF).

The REF assesses the quality and impact of research submitted by UK universities across all subjects.

Highlights for the Faculty include:

  • Politics, Philosophy and Religion at Lancaster has been ranked 3rd overall and ranked top in the UK for research impact
  • Sociology ranked 3rd for world-leading research and 2nd for research impact
  • English Language and Literature has been ranked 3rd in terms of research power, behind only Oxford and Cambridge.

The Faculty’s research environment is outstanding, with 100% scored at 4* and 3*. This recognises the Faculty’s support for researchers, opportunities for interdisciplinary research and excellent links with other research institutions. Departments that were particularly strong in this area were English and Creative Writing, Linguistics and English Language, LICA and Law.

Professor Simon Guy, Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, said: “At Lancaster University we are committed to generating knowledge that inspires and matters globally, and to engaging and influencing beyond the University, so we are delighted that our innovative work across Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences has been recognised as ‘world-leading’”.

Interdisciplinary research

One of the distinctive features of the Faculty's research and teaching culture is its emphasis on interdisciplinarity. This is reflected in the range of postgraduate degree schemes on offer at MA and PhD level, which provide students with the opportunity to study a subject in depth at an advanced level and to access expert teaching and research support in a number of departments across the Faculty.
