Paul Kerswill teaches on African Linguistics School, Rep. of Benin

Date: 23 July 2011 - 30 July 2011

The African Linguistics School is a biennial Summer School for postgraduate students in Linguistics. This second event took place in Porto-Novo, the capital of the Republic of Benin, at the Centre Songhai. 67 students took part in the fortnight of the course- all except five from West Africa. The remaining countries represented were Ethiopia, Kenya, Malawi, Israel and the UK. It is the brainchild of the creolistJohn Singler from NYU, and his co-organiser Enoch Aboh from Amsterdam (originally from Porto-Novo). Some 260 students had applied. The 67 successful individuals had their entire costs paid for (except for the two non-Africans), and the faculty had free board and lodging and a portion of their air fare paid. The next School will be at the University of Ibadan in 2013.
