LAEL 40th Anniversary Celebrations
Date: 15 July 2014
July marked the 40th anniversary of the Department of Linguistics and English Language at Lancaster University. Former colleagues and alumni of the department joined us for a special celebration event on Friday 11th and Saturday 12th July as the department turns 40 in the same year that the University turns 50!
The event saw a series of talks and round table discussions that focused on research areas to which the Department of Linguistics and English Language has made a substantial contribution over the past four decades. There were contributions from people who have shaped the history of the Department, led by Emeritus Professor Geoff Leech. Other current and returning staff gave insights into their work and discussed current issues with audience members, who included many alumni as well as current students. There were also opportunities to appreciate how equipment for research on language has changed during the lifetime of the Department.
The programme for Friday included a public lecture by David Crystal. This was followed by dinner at Lancaster Town Hall with a. a performance by David and Hilary Crystal on Shakespeare's Original Pronunciation. Surprising to many was the breadth and depth of the department's homegrown musical talent, which led to singing and dancing until 11pm.
There was a great deal of tweeting during and after the event, using the hashtag #lael40. Mathew Gillings, a current LAEL undergraduate student, could not attend but, using the power of social media, posted an impressively insightful overview of the celebration on his blog - see LAEL40: Celebrating 40 years of Linguistics at Lancaster.
