Undergraduate gives well received conference paper

Date: 12 May 2007

David Piper, an undergraduate student who will graduate from the Department of Linguistics and English Language in 2007, gave a paper at the Mini-PALA: Stylistics: Eclecticism and Interdisciplinarity conference at the University of Huddersfield. David's paper was titled 'Applying Semino and Short's corpus approach to speech and thought presentation to Orwell's Animal Farm' and was based on his final year dissertation. It was very well received by other conference delegates.

Many other collegues from Lancaster also gave interesting papers at the conference, including:

Brian Walker: 'A corpus approach to analysing the narrators in Julian Barne's novel Talking It Over'

Raksangob Wijitsopon: 'A corpus-based study of direct speech in Jane Austen's Emma'
