NOISE Postgraduate Summer School 2008, organised by the Athena network

Report by Nina Held

NOISE stands for Network Of Interdisciplinary Women's Studies in Europe. The annual NOISE Summer School focuses on European Women's Studies from multicultural and interdisciplinary perspectives. It started in 1994 and since then has taken place in one of the NOISE partner universities (a different one each year). The Centre for Gender and Women's Studies at Lancaster University is one of those partners, giving PhD students the possibility of obtaining a grant for accommodation and travel costs for its attendance (+ no tuition fees if tutoring a group). The Summer School offers a great opportunity to exchange knowledge in the field of Women's Studies in an international context.

I attended the 2008 Summer School which was held in Utrecht. The themes of the two weeks were Intersectionality and Interdisciplinarity. Although it did not fit perfectly into my PhD writing up schedule as I was already in my third year, I was more than glad to have attended and I even found myself writing on the evaluation form at the end of the Summer School that it should have been longer than two weeks! It was a great experience to share a passion and interest for Women's Studies with 67 students from different disciplinary backgrounds and different countries in Europe and from the US. In 2008, the school was taught by 12 academics from various European universities - in this regard, the NOISE Summer Shool offers a great opportunity to meet academics (some of them key figures in their fields) with different expertise in Gender and Women's Studies. The Summer School was very well organised providing a safe and comfortable space for stimulating discussions. To live, study and socialise together with so many other students interested in Women's Studies was just one of the best experiences throughout my whole studies so far. I can highly recommend it. The next Summer School will take place between 17/08 - 28/08 (place to be announced). For further information see: http://www.let.uu.nl/womens_studies/
