Dr Charlotte Baker awarded a Knowledge Exchange Fellowship

Date: 05 May 2014

Dr Charlotte Baker has been awarded a Knowledge Exchange Fellowship of £7600 to fund a two day workshop on albinism in Douala, Cameroon in 2015. The workshop will be organised in collaboration with theUK NGO Standing Voice and the Cameroonian Association Mondiale pour la Défense des Intérêts et la Solidarité des Albinos (ASMODISA). The workshop will include research panels, discussion forums, round tables, presentations by invited speakers, and a keynote speech. Albinism has long been studied 'from the outside', so the proposed workshop in Cameroon will involve the various stakeholders from the beginning, in the planning and design of the workshop, and through to the development of a more inclusive research-led network.

The award follows on from work accomplished with funding from a Wellcome Trust Medical Humanities Grant in 2013 for an event that brought together ten researchers with interests ranging from genetics to education, and fromthe socio-cultural realities of living with albinism in sub-Saharan Africa to cultural representations of the condition. The Wellcome Trust grant also funded an 'Albinism in Africa' website, which aims to provide accurate and accessible information to people living with albinism in sub-Saharan Africa, and which is currently under development.
