Peter Adey

Peter Adey is Reader in Human Geography in the Department of Geography, Royal Holloway, University of London. His research orbits around questions of mobility through the investigation of the socio-technical and security cultures of the airport/aeroplane assemblage, the security apparatus of contemporary emergencies, and the cultural politics of the matter of air. Through these investigations he has sought to bring to bear the insights of contemporary social theory and political philosophy to illuminate rich empirical case-studies within the machinery of the state, working closely with professionals and practitioners within the public policy fields of emergency planning and security design. Peter is on the editorial board of Mobilities and author of Mobility (Routledge, 2009), Aerial Life: spaces, mobilities, affects (Wiley-Blackwell, 2010), the forthcoming Air (Reaktion 2013), and co-editor of The Mobilities Handbook (Routledge, 2013), and From Above: verticality and visual culture (Hurst, 2013) as well as special issues of Cultural Geographies, Journal of Transport Geography and Theory, Culture and Society. Peter was recipient of a Philip Leverhulme Prize in 2011.

Monika Büscher

Monika Büscher is Senior Lecturer in the Centre for Mobilities Research and Director of the mobilities.lab at the Department of Sociology, Lancaster University with close links to Imagination Lancaster, a design and innovation centre and Infolab, the Computing Department at Lancaster University as well as international researchers and industrial partners.

Her ethnographic studies include investigations of mobilities and work practice in art and design, healthcare, software development, event management and emergency response, and public space. Through close collaboration with professionals and designers her work contributes to innovation in these fields. This often requires experimental realization of (partial) futures, enabling ‘ethnographies of change’. Her innovations in mobile methods, video ethnography and ethnographically informed innovation have contributed to participatory design, computer supported cooperative work (CSCW), mobile and ubiquitous computing, and mobilities research.

She has published four edited books and many articles. She is on the editorial board of the Journal for CSCW, visiting fellow at the German Centre for Interdisciplinary Studies research programme on Communicating Disasters and on the programme committees for the European Conference for Computer Supported Work Conference (ECSCW), the Participatory Design Conference (PDC), and the International Conference on Information Systems for Crisis Response and Management (ISCRAM).
