Funding for Postgraduate History at Lancaster

Various sources of national, university and departmental funding are available to postgraduate applicants. Most awards are for UK and EU nationals. Nevertheless, there are some awards for overseas applicants and both domestic and international students may apply for the awards offered by the Department. Many countries also have special schemes to assist postgraduate study in the UK. Further details are provided on the University's Postgraduate website and, for overseas applicants, on the British Council's list of British Government Scholarships.

AHRC awards

The Department of History invites applications for AHRC awards. Lancaster University is part of a North West consortium that has been successful in winning over £14million funding from the Arts and Humanities Research Council; this funding will provide 40 PhD awards each year across the consortium for the next 5 years, beginning in 2014-15.

Awards will include MA plus PhD funding and PhD funding. Please explore our research pages or contact the Director of Postgraduate Studies, Dr Deborah Sutton, for more information about the awards and the supervision the department can offer.

The deadline for applications for 2014-15 is 21 February 2014. Students should normally have been offered a place at Lancaster prior to submitting their AHRC studentship application.

North West Consortium Doctoral Training Partnership application forms and guidance notes are now available on-line from the consortium’s webpages.

ESRC MA and PhD Studentships in Economic and Social History for 2013-14

Lancaster University, in partnership with the Universities of Manchester and Liverpool, has established an ESRC-accredited Doctoral Training Centre. The DTC has been guaranteed 63 awards annually across all subjects to be allocated on a competitive basis among the three universities.

All students working on subjects within Economic and Social History are eligible to apply for an award on either a 1+3 (MA + PhD) or +3 (PhD only, for applicants who already have an MA) basis. Studentships will cover full fees and a stipend, amounting to about £18,000 a year. Students will be able to draw on the full PGT and PhD research training programmes at all three universities in the DTC.

The internal application deadline is 3 February 2014. Research proposals, to be sent to Mrs Amanda Harrison, should be accompanied by a CV. Please note that you will also need to apply separately for a PhD place. Please see attached application form and guidelines for application.

Any queries specifically about the application procedure should be addressed to Dr Deborah Sutton.

Internal Funding for PG Students

Fees bursaries

The following full-fee bursaries are available for entry into the department in October 2014:

· one MA award for UK/EU students
· two 1+3 (MA + PhD) awards for UK/EU students
· one PhD award for UK/EU students

Awards of all fee–waiver awards will be decided on a competitive basis on grounds of academic merit.

In 2014, the History Department expects to make additional awards to two of the successful applicants for the PhD fees bursary, to top up scholarships with a partial living grant. FASS award-holders normally have opportunities to teach in the department.

How to apply: applications for awards in all categories should be submitted electronically to Mrs Amanda Harrison, Department of History. For all awards, a research proposal should also be submitted along with the FASS PG Studentship application form, which also requires you to provide two academic references. Please note that you must already have applied for an MA or PhD place on–line to be eligible for an award.

The deadline for full applications (including references) to reach Amanda Harrison in the History Department is 2 May 2014. Applicants will be informed of the outcome of their application by the middle of May.

Peel Trust Studentship

Funds of up to £2500 per annum are available to postgraduate students, both MA and PhD. The deadline for support in 2013 – 2014 is 9 May 2014. For details of how to apply, please see Student Funding Service webpage.

Alumni Studentships

Applications for Alumni Postgraduate Studentships are now open. Applications are invited from any student who has completed a degree at Lancaster University and wishes to go on to post-graduate study here. The Studentships are £500 each and full details are available here or by contacting the Alumni and Development Office.

Research Support and Training for Current PGR Students

All registered PhD students are eligible to apply to the Department for research support and research training costs. This may cover, for example, travel and other expenses for research trips to libraries, archives, museums, etc.; expenses related to attending academic conferences where you are giving a paper; or the costs of training in a skill necessary for your research, such as enrolling in a language or other skills course for which no provision exists in the university. There is no ceiling on individual applications, but the Department will not normally be able to make more than 5,000 available in total in any given year. You may apply by submitting a statement of your needs, not exceeding 2 pages, to Dr Deborah Sutton, Director of Postgraduate Studies. The statement should include:

  1. a brief explanation of your PhD research,
  2. an explanation of what you need the money for (e.g. summer language course; research in National Archives),
  3. as comprehensive a break–down of costs as you can provide.

Other sources of funding, both internal and external, are available and can been accessed via the University Postgraduate Funding pages. In addition, the university has a range of partial awards to support students financially. Visit the Student Based Services website to find out more.
