HIST491: Heritage & Public History Placement

The department has a growing number of heritage partners, including: the Museum of Lancashire in Preston, the Lancaster Medical History Society, Norton Priory Trust in Runcorn, Cheshire, the North Craven Trust and the Senhouse Museum Trust. The placement can also be organised with another public body of the student’s choice, for example, an archive, library or museum. A wide range of possible work can be undertaken as part of this module, from cataloguing objects, assisting in arrangement for exhibitions and undertaking research work on a corpus of visual or textual sources.

Current Projects include:

  • Oral history study of the Moor Hospital, Lancaster
  • Writing a history of the Senhouse family of Maryport
  • Development of a heritage app. with the John Soane’s Museum, London
  • Processing and analysing a wide-range of materials for the Norton Priory Trust
  • Development of primary and secondary teaching material on Indian soldiers in the First World War

The project proposal is agreed between the department and the heritage body and the project is carried out under the supervision of the partner organisation.

Please consult the Director of Postgraduate Studies if you are interested in this possibility.
