Distinguished Professor Appointment

The Department of History is delighted to be able to announce the appointment of Michael Beckerman as a Distinguished Professor. The appointment will begin on 1 October 2011. Dr Beckerman will combine his duties at Lancaster with his current position in New York.

Michael Beckerman is the Carroll and Milton Petrie Chair and Collegiate Professor of Music at New York University. He has published in several fields including Czech and Eastern European music, music of the Second World War, musical form and analysis, music of the Roma "Gypsies," 19th century music, Mozart and film music. He is author of six books including Janacek as Theorist (Pendragon), New Worlds of Dvorak (W.W.Norton) and Janacek and His World (Princeton). He has received the Janacek Medal from the Czech Ministry of Culture, is a Laureate of the Czech Music Council, and has twice been awarded the Deems Taylor Prize from ASCAP. He lectures both in the United States and internationally, has written for The New York Times, and was a frequent guest on "Live From Lincoln Center." His current project is a book and documentary on the last work composed by Gideon Klein in the Theresienstadt/Terezin concentration camp.
