Successful Completion of PhD by History Student

Date: 3 March 2008

Congratulations to Roger Crawley for successfully passing his viva. Roger's research was on Christopher Marlow: 'An Enigmatic Persona: Impressions of the Character and Reputation of Christopher Marlowe (1564-1593) from 1585 to 2005', a cross-disciplinary investigation of how the identity of the famous Elizabethan poet, playwright and translator has been portrayed with only rudimentary biographical evidence and his 'autobiographical signature' as a guide. The study is a survey of singular impressions of his personality, behaviour, and opinions: impressions gleaned from contemporaneous comment; the writings of antiquarians, historians, literary critics, dramatists and poets during the Neo-classical, Romantic, and Victorian periods (approximately 1750-1900); and from biographers, historians and literary critics during the periods 1900-1950 and 1950-2005. An inventory of a wide range of impressions is presented, including a tabulated representative selection, and 'identikits' which compare his current and legendary identities with the consensus identity. The conclusion is that our image of Marlowe has not shifted very much since the late nineteenth century.
