Stuck between desire and making beds: Housekeeping staff in Havana's hotels

Professor Amalia Cabezas, University of California, Riverside.

This work explores the transformation of the romantic figure of the camarera, or barmaid as they were called before the Cuban revolution, to the current camarera, or housekeeping staff, in the new tourism economy. In addition to a strenuous work schedule housekeepers contend with romantic prospects and sexual harassment. Based on interviews with hotel staff this work examines the implications of analytical frameworks for understanding their working conditions.

Amalia L. Cabezas is the author of Economies of Desire: Sex and tourism in Cuba and the Dominican Republic and co-editor of Una ventana a Cuba y los Estudios cubanos: A Window into Cuba and Cuban Studies, and The Wages of Empire: Neoliberal Policies, Repression and Women's Poverty.Currently, she is a GEMMA Erasmus Mundus Third Country Scholar at the University of Hull.
