Study Abroad

The department is keen to promote study abroad opportunities. The main opportunities we have are:

  • A full year abroad in your second year, usually to a North American (USA, Canada) university. This is something that you need to apply for in the first term of your first year, but please note that making an application at this stage does not commit you to going.
  • Socrates exchanges, usually for one term in your second year or the first half of your third year.
  • A special option, Religion in Contemporary Indian Life, taught at the Dharmaram Institute in Bangalore, India. This is taught during the summer vacation at the end of the second year. The programme includes daily lectures, seminars, excursions, and cultural activities. On their return to Lancaster, students write a supervised dissertation on an aspect of contemporary Indian life. The course is also open to Politics and Philosophy students, who can write about political or philosophical issues in contemporary India.  Please contact Brian Black.

Please contact the Study Abroad advisor, Hiroko Kawanami, for further information on these options. Usually these opportunities are open both to single and joint honours students alike.

Students on the Politics, Philosophy and Economics (PPE) degree programme should be aware that the Department of Economics has more rigid requirements on second year courses than we do. It is important to liaise closely with them to make sure that you will be able to fulfil the requirements of the PPE degree while abroad.

The International Office web pages list some specific universities with which we have links, according to degree subject (Politics, Philosophy, Religious Studies). However, it is often possible to go to other universities with which Lancaster has exchange agreements (for example, those listed in relation to other subjects), so long as your degree subject(s) is/are taught at that university.
