Broader Significance

Conceptual

This project is part of a larger emphasis in the international human rights community on international human rights obligations.  In recent years, the obligations of non-state actors (such as multinational corporations) and intergovernmental actors (such as international financial institutions) have received significant attention in academia, the NGO communities and in international organisations.  The current project focuses one of the aspects of this wider human rights obligations attention, and will inform other areas of research in this regard. More specifically, it will further the theoretical understanding of the implications of extraterritorial human rights obligations

Methodological

The project, with its emphasis on a combination of case-studies and conceptual analysis, will use empirical studies to further doctrinal developments.  The emphasis is strongly on the partnership between NGOs and the academic community, in that all aspects of the work are carried out jointly.

Policy

The ultimate aim of the project is to develop detailed guidelines regarding extraterritorial human rights obligations pertaining to economic, social and cultural rights, that can be applied by all actors involved in human rights monitoring.
