T-REX

Tyrannosaurus Rex was five metres long and weighed six thousand kilos. Its one and a half metres jaws were lined with huge teeth and it had claws on both its short upper limbs and hind feet. The T Rex was the largest meat-eater there has ever been. No one knows exactly the sort of noises T-rex made.

<figure>

Megalosaurus

Megalosaurus was the first dinosaur ever discovered. Megalosaurus was a meat-eater and weighed 9 tonnes and walked on its strong back legs in search of food. It had sharp rough-edged teeth and terrible claws on its feet.

Kronosaurus

was a hug, prehistoric sea-living reptile. It may have dragged itself out of the water to lay its eggs on land.

Dimetrodon was an early Dino, It was a finback reptile. It was 2.7m long. Dimetrodon was pretty agile. <reg>Its</reg> tall fin could be 2.7m, taller than a man.

<figure>

Not all dinosaurs were slow and clumsy. Fabrosaurus was a small, light plant-eater that lived 210 million years ago in south africa. It could <NOTE_LAN desc="word/s missing?"> very quickly on its back legs, Gallimimas was <reg>another</reg> speedy dinosaur. Holding its tail out for balance it could run nearly as fast as <NOTE_LAN desc="word/s missing?"> racehorse. Gallimimas lived about 65 millions years ago in central asia.

Iguanodon was a larger and later two-legged plant-eating dino. It measured 9.7 m from head to tail. <reg>Iguanodons'</reg> thumb was a stony spike. It was a good weapon, too.

<figure>

The largest land animals that ever lived must <reg>surely</reg> <sic>been</sic> in the group known as the Sauropods. Diplodocus was 27.5m

From head to tail almost the length of 2 railway carriages. Diplodocus could raise its head 9.7m above the ground! This <reg>monstrous</reg> beast must have weighed almost 50 tons as much as ten elephants. Although the creatures leg could support it on dry land, a sauropod <reg>usually</reg> spent a lot of time wading in marshes and lakes. The water would help its legs to bear <reg>its</reg> heavy body.

STEGOSAURUS.

Stegosaurs lived in north america. <S>about 140 million years ago. The Stegosaurs is a plant-eater <NOTE_LAN desc="no punctuation"> it was 7 metres long and weighed as much as two cars. The Stegosaurs had a brain the size of a walnut.

Stegosaurus had two rows of triangular bony plates running down its back. Some of these were 75 centimetres high. Scientists think that Stegosaurus warmed up its body by turning the plates to face the sun. It turned them away from the sun to cool down.

TRICERATOPS

Triceratop is a plant-eater <NOTE_LAN desc="no punctuation"> it has a body frill and 3 horns to protect itself. The Triceratop was a large powerful dinosaur. Triceratops walked on all fours and had sturdy pillar-like legs. Its front legs were especially strong because they had to support the weight of its extremely heavy head. Triceratops lived between 70 and 65 million years ago in north America.

Brontosaurus

Brontosaurus means Thunder Lizard. Why did they have to eat all the time? Because they were so big they had to eat and eat all the time. What did they eat? Brontosaurus ate plants and water weeds. Why could they only move slowly? Brontosaurus were so big that they could only move slowly on land <NOTE_LAN desc="no punctuation">

Pachyrhinosa urus

This is one of the horned dinosaurs although it had no horns. Horned <reg>dinosaurs</reg> had parrot-like beaks and bony frills. They ate plants like the long <reg>necks</reg>.

They <reg>walked</reg> on all four legs like the Brontosaurus. The Pachyrhin-osaurus is four metres long. <sic>They</sic> <reg>might</reg> have <reg>been</reg> over a 100 or 90 of them.

What were dinosaurs?

The mighty dinosaurs first appeared on Earth about 220 million years ago. They were reptiles like the crocodiles and turtles <sic>round</sic> today. There were many different kinds of dino-saurs from huge slow Plants-eaters to fierce fast meat-eaters. Dinosaurs ruled the Earth for about 160 million years about 80 times longer than human beings have lived on Earth. About 65 million years ago the dinosaurs

{page 12}

died out. No one is sure why this happened. One idea is that small mammals stole the dinosaur's eggs. Other people think that Earth became colder at that time. The dinosaurs may have starved or frozen to death. Although no-one has ever seen a <sic>dinosaurs</sic> we know a lot about them from <reg>fossils</reg>. <reg>Fossils</reg> are the bones of a <sic>dinosaurs</sic> such as its teeth. When

{page 13}

a dinosaur died its body was buried by layers of rock and mud. Over millions or years its bones turned to stone. Fossils are found in places where the weather has worn the rocks away or where the rocks have broken. Fossils have to be removed very carefully because they are very delicate. The first fossil was

found more than 300 years ago. At the time people thought it belonged to a giant man. They had no idea that dinosaurs had ever existed.

{page 15}

<figure>

From about 195 to 70 <reg>million</reg> years ago the skies were full <NOTE_LAN desc="word/s missing?"> flying reptiles. Rham Phorhynchus had a long furry body and large leathery wings. At the end of its bony tail was a flap of skin. It may have used this as a rudder.
