The three-year What works? Student retention and success programme sought to develop an evidence base about effective practice through seven projects. The findings have a strong congruence: student retention and success is the outcome of student engagement and belonging. This is most effectively nurtured through mainstream activities that all students participate in, and thus the academic sphere is the most important site for nurturing engagement of the type which engenders a sense of belonging.
This seminar will propose alternative - and/or complementary - conceptual frameworks for discussion, and invite colleagues to suggest further approaches. The aim will be to stimulate a dialogue about ways of further theorising the findings from this applied research project to extend the conceptual model.
