Feeling homophobia: The effects and affects of inequality
This presentation takes as its subject recent research conducted with lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and/or queer (LGBTQ) teachers in the state of Victoria, Australia. Despite Victoria's seemingly supportive education policy landscape regarding same sex attracted and gender diverse young people, the same cannot be said for teachers. This project therefore considers how inequalities are lived and remade in the everyday lived sites of schools (Youdell 2011). Of particular interest is how lived experiences of homophobia, institutional apathy and 'diversity fatigue' (Thomas 2007) play out in the lives of teachers. This research reveals that such experiences accumulated over time produce a kind of political and personal depression (Cvetkovich 2012) for LGBTQ teachers. This has broader implications for the project of education and its social justice imperatives.
