Our Comments

We usually expect literature to be written in Standard English. This is because people who write literature are usually well-educated. We also expect literature to be telling us important things, and Standard English is felt to be appropriate to the gravity of what is being written about. There are examples of dialect poems and novels, but they are definitely in the minority, and readers tend to assume that the writer is making some particular socio-political point if he or she writes in a non-standard form.
