Introduction to PhD Study
"Our Department is one of the most outstanding research centres in the social sciences in the world and we think one of the most exciting places to do a PhD in the UK. We are opening up new topics and research agendas in the fields of sociology, science and technology studies, gender and women’s studies, media & cultural studies, social anthropology, social work and disability studies.
PhD students join us from over twenty countries and together create an exceptional and exciting research culture currently numbering over 80 PhD students. All students have office space in the Department alongside their supervisors and support staff. Another distinctive feature is the outstanding skills & training programme available to PhD students, which ranges from courses in research methods to intensive peer writing groups.
This really is an incredible place to study, come and join us"

Finding a Research Topic & Supervisor
The topic you choose for your PhD needs to be something that you find interesting enough to focus on for three years and it needs to fit with the research interests of at least one member of staff at Lancaster.
Have a look at the profiles and projects for department staff to find what they are working on – you might get ideas from their research. Contact staff directly if you identify a supervisor of your choice. Looking at what current and past students have researched will also give you ideas about the sorts of things that would work as a topic. Please also visit our research and publications pages for more information.
The department welcomes applications from PhD and MA students registered at other Universities at home and abroad to come to Lancaster for short periods as visiting students. Further information»
