Jingyang (Stormy) Guan

Media and Cultural Studies Student

Jingyang GuanHi everybody my name is Jingyang Guan and I come from southern China which is far away from the UK. I am a year three student and I study Media and Cultural Studies as my major. After I graduated from my high school in China, I aspired to go abroad to learn about different cultures from my hometown so that I can understand the world more deeply, and learn more professional knowledge and ability as well as skills. So I entered into the International College in Guangdong University of Foreign Studies to start the preparation for my life and study overseas.

In the programmes which link to the UK, the International College offers us choices with different universities and majors. At the start I didn’t know how to make a decision about various universities in the UK, but after the recommendation of my teachers and the Chinese students who were studying in Lancaster, as well as after visiting the official website, I knew I would regret it if I didn’t choose Lancaster University as my first choice. Lancaster University was not ranked into the top-ten of the UK at that time but it has a beautiful campus, convenient and comfort accommodation, an outstanding reputation as a centre of excellent teaching, scholarship and research, advanced equipment as well as friendly staff and tutors.

I am interested in different cultures, and like activities and jobs where I can interact with others. As a result, I chose Media and Cultural Studies as my major. Apart from an important compulsory module, the University gives us a large amount of freedom to choose modules which we are interested in. All of our 2+2 students studied the same courses when we were in China, but here we can choose different directions to learn and develop. I feel so lucky about this. I find the most important and enjoyable part of the degree is the seminar as there are no seminars in the Chinese university system. After the knowledge and theories we receive in lectures, and our own reading, we have useful discussions and explain our questions and new ideas during the seminars, both with students and tutors. The tutors are always kind and helpful; they encourage our new ideas and guide us to link our theory and practice together. When faced with questions which we need advice about, it is always easy to contact with them and gain professional and useful suggestions, both about our study and career plans.

Lancaster brings us not only degrees, but also all of the social activities and organizations here, such as volunteer jobs, the Christmas ball and pub quiz etc. Through them, we not only relax, but also learn how to communicate with friends who come from different countries and areas. Entering into England and Lancaster University is a very important turning point as well as milestone of my life. It has changed me a lot and helps me to approach a successful career.
